ABOUT THE COFFEE

Kenya Kairima

Edwin and Mary farm their land alongside Edwin’s mother, Rahab, and his brother, Samuel. (Kairima is a blend of lots from each of their three plots.) We’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand their dedication to quality, a foundation upon which we believe a long-lasting relationship will flourish.

Mary and Edwin Kamau

Last year we showcased a delightful peaberry lot from Kairima; this year, we present the AA lot from the 2020 harvest, an extremely limited selection that’s been stored in a climate-controlled facility to preserve its peak flavor.

Milled Kenyan coffees are graded, sorted, and rated by seed shape and density. A lot’s letter grade refers to its diameter measurement, determined by the screens through which the coffee is sifted. AA-grade lots have the largest beans, usually the result of more mature coffee cherries, and it’s not uncommon for them to have more pronounced flavors thanks to increased sugar development. We find this lot decadently sweet, and hope you enjoy this limited release while it lasts.

Its release marks the debut of the short film 'Kairima to Brooklyn,' documented by Rich Gilligan. Enjoy them both in good company.
