ABOUT THE COFFEE
Ethiopia Genji Chala
The community of Genji Chala is served by the Nano Chala washing station, one of the original collection points established over fifteen years ago by a partnership between USAID and Technoserve to fund infrastructure development in the woreda (district) of Agaro. Coffees from this region in southwestern Ethiopia were traditionally sun-dried and sold in bulk for low prices under a generic regional name. Thanks to the partnership, and to the implementation of highly water-efficient Penagos pulping equipment at each site, this area’s network of washing stations can reliably produce impeccable coffees and thus command higher prices in the market.
The past decade has established Agaro’s reputation for distinctive, high-quality washed offerings. Reaching their peak expression well after harvest, we find they present a range of fresh and dried-fruit characteristics, along with a spiced floral nuance that defines their flavor provenance.
